The Spessart, Hesse
The Brothers Grimm town of Steinau an der Straße is a must for all fairy-tale lovers and fans of the famous fairy-tale collectors. Here you really will be following in the footsteps of the Grimms: from the family’s only surviving house and the brothers’ schoolhouse to the original floor that Jacob and Wilhelm walked over as young boys. This floor can be found in the barn of the former guild hall which today houses the Steinau Museum. The museum is particularly proud of the altar bible from 1710 from which grandfather Friedrich Grimm read. Beginning with the famous brothers’ great-grandfather, four generations of the family can be traced to Steinau. The ‘an der Straße’ supplement to the town’s name is of great historic importance to the small town. It refers to the Frankfurt-Leipzig trade road that was a major trading route between the 16th and 18th centuries. This brought reputation and prosperity to the town in the Middle Ages.
