Space for activities
The Automuseum Melle at the foot of the Melle mountains, just behind the railway station - on Pestelstrasse, presents "history on wheels" in the listed industrial building of the former Melchersmann furniture factory.
In the halls, on three floors with an exhibition area of more than 3,000 square metres, more than 300 vehicles from different eras of automobile construction can be seen at any time. More than 2,000 different historic vehicles have been presented on loan to date: A repeat visit is worthwhile!
In addition to the regular change of exhibits, there are interesting special exhibitions. A special highlight of the museum are expert and entertaining guided tours: widely known by connoisseurs, also very popular with groups or school classes.
The museum shop invites you to linger and the large courtyard of the car museum is popular all year round for open-air events and classic car meetings.
A museum with tradition
Founded in 1984 in modest premises in Ibbenbüren, the museum was able to move to the ideally suited premises on Pestelstraße in Melle in 1997, where it has steadily grown to its present size.
A unique concept
Car museums have always struggled with a cardinal problem: both the automobiles and the expertise associated with them can only be preserved for the future through proper use. Until now, however, this did not seem possible. In Melle, a different approach was taken: owners of interesting automobiles were approached and asked to do something for the general public. Their treasures could give pleasure to many, but the museum would only accept vehicles in running order for a maximum of six months, after which they should be used again. This met with a sympathetic response and the museum achieved several goals with this concept:
History on wheels
Probably nothing has changed people's lives more than the invention of the automobile. At first it was hailed as a vision of unlimited freedom, redemption from the depressing environmental problems of the 19th century and a path to immeasurable prosperity. To some extent this became reality, but today we know that the very success also brought serious problems. Nevertheless, no one today could imagine life without the automobile. The Automuseum Melle wants to present this probably most important area of recent history in a versatile and lively way using outstanding exhibits as examples.
Castles, manor houses, mills, observatories, environmental towers and other cultural facilities invite visitors to linger.
The natural wonder of the bifurcation in Melle-Gesmold is unique. The varied landscape of the Grönegau between the Wiehengebirge and the Teutoburg Forest is perfect for adventurous walks. Forest is perfect for exciting excursions and tours. Many events, also in the Melle districts, and guided tours of the town round off a visit. Melle offers first-class hotels and a varied gastronomy.
