Once founded by Bernard of Clairvaux and run by Cistercian monks, Himmerod Abbey is still a place where you can experience faith and spirituality alive.
There is something special in the air here. Let your gaze be captivated by the impressive monastery church, which was built in 1751 in the Baroque style and radiates an almost magical atmosphere. The small chapel of grace is a contact point for many who face worries and hardships and seek support in everyday life.
The monastery businesses invite you to browse and discover. In the small art and bookstore, you will find theological literature with a focus on tranquility and inner contemplation, as well as works by the Himmerode monks and products made especially in the abbey, such as abbey beer, monastery liqueur, mustard and honey.
The monastery gardening opens every year on March 1 and holds a wide range of vegetable young plants, perennials, herbs and bedding plants. The monastery fishery is also worth a little detour. Fish had a firm place on the menu of the Cistercians, so fish farming in Himmerod has a centuries-old tradition.
Even today, fresh fish from the monastery's ponds is served in the monastery restaurant, which invites you to enjoy delicious regional dishes at the end of the day in Himmerod.
The museum "Alte Mühle" is located at the oldest building of the abbey. It houses an enamel collection and a bronze collection. Temporary exhibitions are regularly held on the first floor of the "Alten Mühle".
