Welcome to Hunsrück

The Hunsrück is a region in the middle of Rhineland-Palatinate. The four rivers Moselle, Nahe, Saar and Rhine flow around the low mountain range. The heights of the Hunsrück are gently undulating and covered with extensive beech or spruce forests, flowering meadows or cultivated fields. Streams have cut deep into the slate and formed valleys as well as gorge-like ravines. Moors or quartzite rock formations are also part of the landscape.
There are three protected areas in Hunsrück, the Saar-Hunsrück and Soonwald-Nahe nature parks and the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. The credo of the national park "Let nature be nature" makes it clear that step by step the 10,000-hectare area on the western Hunsrück heights can develop into a "primeval forest of tomorrow".
The castles and monuments tell of an eventful history. Castle ruins such as the Baldenau moated castle, the Grimburg castle complex or Kastellaun castle have been restored as far as was possible according to the preservation order. As an impressive church, the Hunsrück Cathedral shines far beyond the small village of Ravengiersburg. The largest towns in Hunsrück are Hermeskeil, Simmern, Kastellaun and Kirchberg. In addition, the towns of Kell am See, Thalfang, Morbach, Rheinböllen and Emmelshausen are also well-known.
Germany's most beautiful suspension bridge, the Geierlay, is also located in the Hunsrück. 360 metres long and almost 100 metres high, it swings from one bridgehead to the other between the towns of Mörsdorf and Sosberg. Built on the model of Nepalese suspension rope bridges, it is an impressive structure and a popular destination for excursions. The highest elevation in Rhineland-Palatinate can also be found in Hunsrück, the 816-metre-high Erbeskopf.
A high-quality network of attractive hiking trails runs through the region. The 415-kilometre Saar-Hunsrück Climb is particularly impressive. Certified as Germany's best long-distance hiking trail and twice voted Germany's most beautiful hiking trail, the hiking route makes its motto "Experience diversity" clear many times over. Far from civilisation, the Steig runs along narrow nature trails for more than 70 percent of its route. Unforgettable hikes can also be experienced on the Soonwaldsteig or on the Saar-Hunsrück Traumschleifen, the premium quality circular trails.
The designated cycling routes in the region have special qualities and a steadily growing number of enthusiasts. In the Hunsrück-Nahe bike region, pleasure cyclists, racing cyclists, gravel bikers or mountain bikers will all find a suitable tour.
A wide range of holiday flats, holiday homes or holiday parks, rustic village inns, family-run guesthouses and excellent comfort hotels invite you to spend a relaxing or active holiday in the Hunsrück.
