Welcome to Kastellaun Castle
In the middle of the old centre of Kastellaun rises an ancient wall: Kastellaun Castle!
The castle and with it the town of Kastellaun were first mentioned in documents in the early 13th century.
The castle belonged to the Counts of Sponheim, who, however, had their ancestral seat near Bad Kreuznach. The Sponheims only resided in Kastellaun under Simon II in the 14th century. Two centuries later, Margrave Eduard Fortunatus of Baden chose Kastellaun Castle as his temporary residence. During the Palatinate War of Succession, the castle was destroyed in 1689. In the 18th century, Kastellaun and the castle ruins fell under French rule, which lasted until 1815. Afterwards, Kastellaun was part of the Prussian Rhine Province. In 1884, the town acquired the castle ruins and carried out a first restoration. At the end of the 20th century, it underwent another major renovation. Today, Kastellaun Castle once again stretches its defiant walls into the sky.
Sponheim Castle in ARGO - relive the past Experience the building digitally reconstructed on the authentic site on your smartphone or tablet with the ARGO app! The castle of Kastellaun is a particularly vivid example of a medieval castle. The remains of the buildings of the upper castle are still largely intact, and the three dominant structures of the upper castle are digitally visible: the palace in the west (16th century), the Gothic hall building of the 13th/14th century with a cross-vaulted cellar in the southeast, and the round keep as the highest tower of the castle. The lower castle was rebuilt on old foundations. Download the free app:

Insert the arrow, tighten the string, somehow aim and release...? But there's still something missing... Practising archers agree that a successful hit is 90% the result of theoretical knowledge and only 10% of actual shooting practice. But don't worry, archery courses in the Knight's Classroom at Kastellaun Castle are by no means dry subject matter. It doesn't matter whether you are young or old, alone, with your partner or the whole family with children from the age of 5: Archery is concentration and meditation paired with sport, fun and a sense of achievement. In the ancient setting of the former Gothic castle cellar in the middle of the lively town of Kastellaun, archery can also be practised meditatively in complete silence. With the individually tailored course offers, you can choose whether the sporty-experiential or the meditative-contemplative factor should be in the foreground for you.
