The Taunus, Hesse
In Idstein, the former residence town of the House of Nassau, timber-frame houses from the 15th to the 18th century vie for the attention of visitors. You can decide for yourself which is the prettiest while strolling through the cobblestoned alleyways in the quaint old town. Maybe the Killingerhaus is your favourite with its elaborately carved details. Or perhaps it’s the Schiefes Haus, meaning leaning house, from 1725. Thanks to extensive renovation work, it only appears as if it’s about to topple over. There’s even a walking tour that passes all of the timber-frame houses to ensure you don’t miss any of the 200 wonderful examples with their varying styles. You can pick up the brochure in the tourist information office along with the key to the Hexenturm. The reward for climbing this tower’s 165 steps is the best vantage point in Idstein. From here, it’s only a short stroll to the residence palace and the enchanting palace gardens.
