Black Forest, Baden-Wuerttemberg
The visit of Ortenberg Castle alone is worthwhile for the fantastic panoramic view of the Vosges Mountains and far into the Kinzig valley. Located on a mountain spur and surrounded by extensive vineyards, the castle is the landmark and eponym of the Ortenau.
The origins of the castle go back to a castle complex built in the 11th/12th century. Zähringer, Staufer, the bishops of Strasbourg and House Fürstenberg can be found in the eventful history of the chateau. In particular, the castle served as the administrative seat of the Ortenau District Bailiwick of Upper Austria.
Today's chateau was built in the early 19th century on the ruins of the castle, which has since been demolished. The medieval castle complex and the striking neo-Gothic style of the chateau form a unique combination.
Today the chateau serves as a youth hostel and is available for overnight guests and conference groups.
