Welcome to Otterberg Monastery Church

The former Cistercian abbey church is one of the best preserved religious buildings from the heyday of the Cistercian Order.
In 1168, construction of the abbey church of Otterberg began. After almost 90 years of construction, the abbey church was consecrated in 1254. With its clear practicality and ornamental austerity, it is a prime example of the rules of the white monks' order.
With a total length of almost 80 metres, it is an impressive building – even without towers.
The late Romanesque and early Gothic church has been fully preserved in its original state and gives visitors an impression of Burgundy.
At first glance, it appears that hardly anything remains of the medieval monastery buildings, but with a trained eye or under expert guidance, it is possible to discover even more relics.
For example, the chapter hall, a Romanesque hall dating back to 1185 with 3 High Gothic windows, which served as a meeting room for the monks.
Gables, oriels and windows have survived from the 14th century abbey.
Second-hand stones can be found almost throughout the old town area. Parts of the medieval enclosure wall complete the picture.
The church is used as a simultaneum by Protestant and Catholic Christians.
