Vogelsberg, Hesse
Alsfeld is blessed with more than 400 beautiful timber-frame houses and is, as a result, a European model town for the protection of historic buildings and monuments. The most famous of these is the Gothic town hall in the medieval market square. The world of the Brothers Grimm plays an important role here. In the House of Fairy Tales, a timber-frame house from 1628, you will find a variety of fairy tales portrayed in lovingly decorated rooms. Little Red Riding Hood is also said to have inspired the small red bonnet that is part of the surrounding area’s traditional dress. The stone figure above the Schwalm Well behind the stocks portrays this. Talking of stocks, there is still an iron handcuff hanging on the corner of the nearby Pranger building. All of the town’s peculiarities can be discovered on a fairy-tale tour or an adventure tour. Taking a subsequent break in the historic old town and sampling original Alsfeld specialities such as Kartoffelwurst sausages or the Vogelsberg region’s version of onion cake called Salzekuchen will undoubtedly add to your day’s enjoyment.
