Welcome to Volcano Park

The Lava Dome - German Volcano Museum Mendig presents volcanism in the region around the Laacher See volcano. The landscape around the Laacher See volcano is unique in Europe. Here, volcanism is only "sleeping" and is not considered extinct. The volcano park was set up to introduce people to the fascination of the life- and death-giving energy from the depths of the earth, and the Lava Dome was established as a very special museum. On 700 square metres it is not "museum-like", but spectacular - for children and adults, for absolute newcomers and for those who are pre-informed about volcanism.

In the "Land of Volcanoes", a multimedia show tells the story of two huge volcanic eruptions that had an enormous impact on the landscape of the volcanic Eifel: the eruption of the Wingertsberg volcano, on whose lava flow the town of Mendig stands, and the Laacher See volcano. Images, sounds and projections let you relive a volcanic eruption - up close and intense, but fortunately virtual.

The "Volcano Workshop" is a genuine small science centre. At ten interactive test and experimental stations, visitors gain a vivid impression of the processes inside the earth and get a taste of volcanology.

The "Time of the Volcanoes" lets stones speak: Anyone who touches them can hear and see how the great eruptions of the past took place. Particularly exciting are also current seismological data on volcanic eruptions and earthquakes as well as current images from webcams all over the world, which can be accessed online. A re-enactment of a research camp illustrates the methods and techniques used by scientists to study volcanoes. And in the round cinema, a fictitious news programme worthy of Hollywood takes your breath away, because here it becomes clear what a renewed eruption of the Laacher See volcano would mean.
