Manderscheid - Castle Romance in Twos

The spa town of Manderscheid is especially famous for two medieval castle ruins that stand opposite each other on steep mountain spurs, not far from the town's streets. Separated only by the Lieser River, which carves a lively path through the densely wooded rocky landscape in the valley, these imposing structures were destroyed in several military conflicts in the 17th century. Between the castles lies a meadow, equipped with a barbecue hut, becoming a perfect place for a breather while hiking on the Eifelsteig or for a family picnic with children in the summer.

However, on a weekend in August, the castles and the meadow serve as ideal settings for the spectacular Castle Festival, featuring traditional crafts, jugglers, knight tournaments, and courtly love songs.
In Advent, the Manderscheid Castle Christmas grants the town a special charm on the first weekend of Advent.

Once upon a time, the imposing, meter-thick walls were not so romantic and carefree in their enjoyment of play and fun. Both served as defensive structures in the conflict area between the Electoral Palatinate of Trier and the Duchy of Luxembourg. The animosity ran deep; across the narrow valley, they eyed each other suspiciously.
The freely accessible Upper Castle still appears formidable today with its five-story keep. The Lower Castle can be explored through guided tours—even at night—or on your own, though it remains closed in bad weather. It was expanded into a magnificent fortified seat of power by the noble family of the Lords of Manderscheid in the 12th century.

Those who climb the steep path to the Upper Castle will catch the intoxicating scent of wild strawberries in the summer. Birds chirp, and the Lieser flows peacefully by. The sun-kissed walls are a refuge for small lizards and wild bees. Nature has filled the once belligerent site with peace. Visitors can experience it while hiking on the Eifelsteig and the Lieser Trail, as well as on the Vulkamaar Trail, all of which touch the spa town. The Manderscheid Castle Trail and the County Path connect the cultural history and the spectacular nature surrounding the small town. The Maar Museum featuring the prehistoric horse or the Moll Candle Factory make Manderscheid an attractive destination for those longing for down-to-earth experiences, beyond just the castles.
